I don’t think I decided, it just kind of happened. I was always most interested in science at school and therefore spent more time on it, so got better grades. Its funny really, you don’t actually realise the point at which you become a scientist – that is, until people start calling you one 😛

When I got my first job offer I guess. I didn’t go to university with becoming a scientist as my only goal, I just gravitated towards what I thought I would be good at and what I enjoyed.

I didn’t know if I wanted to be a scientist or an engineer. In fact I am still not sure what i am. But I just kept doing what I enjoyed. When I started doing my masters was when I realized I really enjoyed doing research..

I never really made a conscious decision to become a scientist but I always asked a lot of questions and wanted to know more about the world in which we live. I used to dive a lot and wonder what was down there in the depths beyond the limits of where I could go on scuba. Eventually I went back to university and studied oceaongraphy and knew that I didn’t want to do anything else. For me (and I think a lot of other people) being a scientist isn’t just about a job; it’s what you do. If you can find something you love it doesn’t feel like going to work. Life’s too short to spend most of your week doing something you don’t like doing.
