I can’t say that I have one. We don’t all do experiments all the time. I’m excited by the ATLAS experiment and can’t wait to find out what discoveries will come from this. If you’re interested you can read more about it here: http://atlasexperiment.org/

When I was at school we did a ‘fireball’ experiment. We put fairy liquid in water, mixed it up and then bubbled gas through the water. We scooped the bubbles up into the air, and then put a match under them, and the bubbles turned into huge fireballs! Probably not allowed to do this now…against health and safety rules!!

This is difficult – usually my favorite experiment is the one I am doing at the moment. At the moment I am working with two students to understand what is causing some new tungsten alloys to break. The tests are snapping small pieces of the tungsten and seeing where they break. We then do the tests at higher and higher temperatures (the hottest is 1100oC) and see how if the way they break changes. At the moment the results don’t make much sense, but I hope by the end of the summer we will understand what’s happening.
