Usually dead bacteria. It sounds quite sad, but as my job is to find out how a bacteria survives I spend alot of time trying to kill it! The easiest way to see if it is alive or not is to look at it under the microscope. The bacteria I work on, Campylobacter, moves and swims in water, so we know its dead when it stops swimming. 🙂
