Benthic ecologists study the ecology of marine animals that live on the seafloor or in the seafloor sediments. These animals are called the benthos because they live at the bottom of the sea. Ecology is simply the relations that living organisms have with each other and their environment. Benthic ecologists work on things including the composition, distribution, amount (biomass), number, and changing states of organisms within and among ecosystems.
