Publishing my work. Once you have done some research, you can publish it for other scientists to read and learn from. But this isn’t easy, first a group of scientists must judge it and see if it is good enough for the world to see! Its always great when they say yes, it means you’re doing something right and worthwhile!

      Hi there!

I’ve been in my new career 3.5 years, I’m not sure what I’ve been working towards is at a point that you might call an “achievement” yet. For me, it’s ok as long as I can make a difference in people’s lives, even if I don’t get all the glory.

I’d go with describing a new species because I see that as an honour and a privilege and it gave me great pleasure. It’s also something I never thought I’d get to do. Being part of the team that discovered the world’s deepest hydrothermal vents is right up there too – this is the stuff of my dreams so to actually live it was amazing! Achievements like these provide great motivation; they keep me going through the tough times when work is more challenging or less exciting.

Being awarded my PhD. It took 4 years and was really really hard work. At the end of that I had a viva where I was quizzed about it for 3.5hours. When they told me I had passed I was so pleased!
