• Question: Hi Rebecca, just used my Google-Fu to find out more about Campylobacter, and the images suggested that the bacteria seems to have developed two tails (?), does that have any physical benefactors?

Hi! Great question. Yes it does! The tails are called ‘Flagella’, but they are pretty much tails. Lots of bacteria have them, Campylobacter has one on each end. The tail is used to help the bacteria swim more quickly by propelling it along, it also helps it ‘drill’ into the lining of your intestines when its trying to infect. Once the bacteria has infected, it also uses its flagella to eject out proteins that make infection easier and help the bacteria avoid being killed by your immune system.
