• Question: Do the high pressures and tempuratures at the hydrothermal vents create difficulties in collecting information/samples? How do you overcome this?

Temperature isn’t so much of an issue because the really high temperatures are only where the vent fluids exit the chimneys; as soon as the fluid mixes with seawater it becomes much cooler. As long as we keep equipment out of the hottest fluid it is OK! Pressure is more of an issue because it relates to depth; the greater the depth the higher the pressure so we can’t just dive down there and collect data and samples. Consequently we have to use equipment to do this for us (such as manned submersibles and remotely operated vehicles).
